With our support, the fourteenth edition of Signal, the festival of digital and creative culture, will once again introduce Czech audiences to work by leading international artists, primarily in light design and digital art. For the third time, it will also feature a curatorial programme that opens up international opportunities for Czech artists. And for the very first time, the festival route will extend into Dejvice, including our headquarters at PPF Gate.

Why we support the project

  • Signal Festival plays a significant role in bringing art into public spaces and introduces Czech audiences to outstanding digital and light art from abroad

  • each year, it provides a major source of inspiration for the Czech art scene, introducing it to work by internationally renowned artists

  • most of the programme is free to attend

  • the curatorial programme, launched two years ago with our support, raises the profile of Czech artists on the global stage and helps them build connections with the international cultural community

About the project

Signal Festival traditionally offers visitors a programme featuring renowned international and Czech artists working in light design, visual and digital art, artificial intelligence and conceptual art. It offers memorable experiences and entertainment while also introducing audiences to an area of art that remains underrepresented in traditional cultural institutions. It combines Prague’s historic setting with the latest technologies and contemporary social issues.

The festival was founded by producer Martin Pošta, curator Jan Rolník and others associated with the art collective The Macula. Preparations for the first edition in 2013 took three years. The organisers succeeded in bringing leading names from around the world to Prague and establishing a festival of light that will take place for the fourteenth time this year.

Signal Festival is one of the Czech Republic’s leading producers of contemporary art. It supports emerging Czech artists and has commissioned dozens of original installations created specifically for the festival. It organises accompanying programmes for children, professionals and students, and collaborates with numerous international festivals and cultural institutions.

For the fifth time, the PPF Foundation’s support is enabling the festival to present outstanding international artists, inspiring current and future generations of creators while introducing the wider public to contemporary art from around the world.

Two years ago, our support helped launch a programme designed to raise the profile of Czech artists on the global stage and encourage dialogue with the international cultural community, particularly through connections with curators from abroad. This year, for the third time, representatives of renowned festivals and cultural institutions from around the world will come to Prague and visit selected Czech artists’ studios during Signal Festival. These visits give the artists a valuable opportunity to present their work and open the door to exhibiting their pieces and installations abroad.

This year’s curatorial programme will feature seven Czech artists: Milan Cais, Alex J. Jindrák / Modified Studio, Krištof Kintera, Jakub Nepraš, Jakub Pešek / Lunchmeat Studio, Jan Sládečko / ZenFrames and Jan Slanina. Seven international curators have also confirmed their participation so far: Dorothy Di Stefano, Nacha Delpiano, Jarkko Halunen, Kun-Ying Lin, Viola Lukács, Romain Tamayo and Prodromos Tsiavos.
