Why we support the project

  • the exhibition will showcase Czech architectural talent at Berlin’s respected Aedes gallery and involve it in the international debate on the future of cities

  • experience gained from the studio’s completed projects in the Czech Republic and abroad will inform concrete proposals for transforming sites in Berlin

  • collaboration with local experts, institutions and residents creates new professional connections and opportunities that can continue beyond the exhibition

  • the open studio and accompanying programme will make architecture more accessible to the public and students, inviting them to join discussions about the places they live in

About the project

How can cities develop by making use of what is already there? This is the question explored by the exhibition CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF = Building the Existing City. The studio’s first solo exhibition in Germany will take place from 22 October to 3 December 2026 at Berlin’s Aedes gallery. A respected venue for international debate on architecture, Aedes has presented the work of figures such as Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry.

Founded in 2010 by Ondřej Chybík and Michal Krištof, the studio will bring twenty projects spanning more than fifteen years of its work to Berlin. They include the Horácká Arena in Jihlava, the transformation of Brno’s Zvonařka bus terminal, the Nusle Brewery redevelopment, and Mendel Square and Mendel’s Greenhouse. Four themes – PLAY, LIVE, ADAPT and ACTIVATE – will reveal how the architects approach buildings, entire neighbourhoods and the quality of public space.

For six weeks, the gallery will also become an open architectural studio. The team will work on four proposals for sites in Berlin selected through an open call. Together with local experts, institutions and residents, they will explore new uses for buildings and public spaces. Visitors will be able to follow the designs as they develop and join the discussions. The programme will also feature lectures, themed gatherings, film screenings and workshops for schools.

Our support will help fund the production, transport and installation of the exhibition elements. This will give Czech talent an opportunity to present its work internationally and build relationships that can continue beyond the exhibition. The studio’s ambition is for at least one of the Berlin proposals to progress to a further stage of collaboration or preparations for implementation within the following year.
